Ramadan is a célébration. The voice rises above the houses, a strong call, and the avenue Bourguiba empties as if by magic. The last sputtering of a scooter gets farther away and the night settles down into a silence broken only by the chirping of birds. A little later the nocturnal town comes alive, groups of young people invade the promenade, families stroll and children play; so begins a night of friend and family reunions. Every Ramadan in a region or country where Islam is a state religion is both mysterious and festive to me; families get together, friends are invited over, and between the copious night- time meals and daily fasts we remember human possibility. Happy Ramadan to all my Muslim friends!
